Stephen is Southern Monitoring Services contracted specialist acoustician to provide analysis and advice services to the Ministry of Health and the Public Health Services through SMS's Environmental Noise Analysis and Advice Service contract.
Dr Stephen Chiles is a self-employed acoustics engineer and independent commissioner. He has worked in acoustics since 1996, holding positions as a research officer at the University of Bath, a principal environmental specialist for the New Zealand Transport Agency, and as a consultant for the international firms Arup, WSP, and URS, and for the specialist acoustics firms Marshall Day Acoustics and Fleming & Barron. He is routinely engaged by central and local government, companies and individual residents to provide acoustics advice and undertake assessments and design for infrastructure, industrial, commercial, educational, cultural, recreational and residential developments.
Stephen has two degrees in acoustics (Doctor of Philosophy and Bachelor of Engineering), is a Chartered Professional Engineer in acoustics, and a Fellow of the UK Institute of Acoustics. He is the Convener of the New Zealand Industry Reference Group for the committee responsible for approximately 200 'ISO' standards relating to acoustics . He was Chair of the 2012 New Zealand Acoustics Standards Review Group, Chair for the 2010 revision of the wind farm noise standard (NZS 6808) and on the committee for the 2008 general environmental noise standards (NZS 6801 and NZS 6802).
